Earlier this month the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Association (HLSR) bestowed $84,000.00 in 2006 scholarships to seven Humble Independent School District seniors. Christina Galvan and Abbey Konz from Humble High School, Christine Adolphe, Yi Guo, Meredith Mosier, and Christine Wilson from Kingwood High School, and LaTonya Wilson from Quest High School each received a $12,000 award.
The recipients were chosen on the basis of academics, leadership, financial need, character, citizenship, and community involvement. Only those planning to attend a Texas college or university are eligible.
The Humble/Kingwood Houston Metro Go Texan Committee, a local subcommittee of the HLSR, held a dinner honoring the 2006 Humble ISD recipients on May 17 at NATCO in Humble. Students and parents were recognized along with Melba Eveler, chairman of the Houston Metro Go Texan Committee and Roger Bethune, District 1 Chairman.
The Humble/Kingwood Houston Metro Go Texan Committee is made up of volunteers living and/or working in the Humble Independent School District. Scholarship dollars are raised through hosting local fund raisers throughout the year. This guarantees at least one scholarship will be awarded to a senior at each of the three area high schools.
Previous Go Texan events have included golf tournaments, dances, and barbecue cook-offs. Every fund raising effort relies heavily on community support. Local businesses generously donate goods and services to help defray the costs.
The Committee also needs community participation to make the events successful. For information on upcoming events or if you’re interested in becoming a member of the Humble/Kingwood Go Texan Committee, please contact committee captain Allen Potter at 281/548-1103.
