The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department will embark on its 24th year of the Holiday Tree Recycling Program by providing 18 recycling drop-off sites for Holiday Trees throughout Houston. All drop-off sites will be closed on New Year's Day. Visit the link for site location: http://www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/christmastree_recycling.html.
Tinsel, lights, ornaments, plastic tree stands and plastic water bowls should be removed from the trees. The recycled trees will be converted into mulch, which will in turn help save landfill space, tax payer money and also help preserve the environment.
Trees with artificial snow (flocked) will not be accepted for recycling; they will be picked up on the resident's scheduled "Junk Waste" day in February. Commercial vendor trees will not be accepted. Living Earth Technology, a leading composting company in Houston, has partnered with the COH to mulch the Holiday Trees at no cost to the City. The mulch is packaged in blue bags as Living Earth Houston Mulch and sold in local stores, such as Lowes. Ten cents from every bag sold and fifty cents from every ton sold at Living Earth facilities is returned to the City to expand recycling programs.
