I'm curious - does Kingwood flood? Has it flooded? How does it fare in hurricanes? How did it fare during tropical storm allison? We are new to houston and are currently leasing a house and found that the owners had to be rescued from the rooftop by BOAT during allison (1960 & 45 area). We are looking to purchase and are really interested in the kingwood area. Any advice/comments are greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Cher

Hi Cher,

Allison was before my time, but I think that the only areas that would be an issue would be down off of Hamblen Rd closer to the lake. A Realtor that has been around for awhile should be able to tell you. One of the site sponsors, Dawn Bajalieh, was our Realtor and she knows pretty much everything there is to know about Kingwood.

The biggest concern in Kingwood is drainage of the storm sewers. If those get clogged during a storm you can have an issue. So pick a street where it looks like people clean their curbs.

I have a friend in Porter that has a lake on their property. They had water in their house during a couple of tropical storms, enough to ruin the carpet. So you have to watch out for low lying areas near water.

I did have a long-time resident tell me that about 20 years ago there was a flood that blocked off Kingwood Dr at the railroad tracks. This was when there was only one exit out of Kingwood.

Overall, Kingwood weathered Rita fairly well. There were some trees and limbs down, power outages for a few days. At 6:00 am there weren't clean-up crews organized by the Kingwood Chamber clearing the main streets, so residents were inconvenienced as much as they might have been otherwise. There are some pictures from around Kingwood in the Photo Gallery right after the hurricane.

Post edited by: Carla, at: 2006/03/27 16:22
