Define Yourself with Fonts

Whether you are creating a logo, an ad or a report, picking just the right font is tough.

I was just in the middle of creating an ad and found myself saying . . .

“Too swirly . . . ”

“Too boxy . . . ”

“Too techy . . . ”

“Too foxy . . . ” (just kidding)

It sounded like I was reciting the Dr. Seuss book Old Hat New Hat.

Typography is important. It is the frame in which your content is viewed.

Quick Tips for Picking Fonts

  1. Pick two or three fonts: Even though the most casual desktop publisher has access to hundreds of fonts, limit yourself to two or three fonts. Your piece will start to look messy and chaotic if you use more than that. While there are some people that can combine more fonts in a piece effectively, if you’re not sure of your ability to do so . . . you’re most likely not one of them.
  2. Choose your a style: Do you want to present a formal or informal image? Is your business old fashioned or high tech? You can mix serif and san-serif fonts, but make sure they evoke the same style
  3. Mix it up for interest: Use your selected fonts in different point sizes, weights, and styles to create interest and dimension in your piece.

I still haven’t found the right font for my ad so it’s back to Photoshop for me.
