Numerous Festivities Planned for the Kingwood Area’s celebration of the July 4th Holiday

Kingwood, Texas, June 8, 2005 -- Local residents will have their pick of activities for the upcoming celebration of our nation’s birth – from street dances, to Bar-B-Que, to fireworks to parades, there is something for everyone.

Known as The Livable Forest, the master-planned Kingwood community and surrounding area has grown into beautiful small town, boasting everything from a charming Town Center, to the world’s largest private country club, to some of the most beautiful homes and neighborhoods in the Houston area.

The official kickoff to the Kingwood Area 4th of July Festivities will be the 11th Annual Alspaugh’s Bar-B-Que and Street Dance, scheduled for Saturday evening, July 2nd from 6 PM until 11 PM in the Alspaugh’s Ace Hardware parking lot.

This event has long been held as one of the favorite events for local residents. Rick Alspaugh, owner of Alspaugh’s Ace Hardware, is personally inviting everyone to join him in celebration the nations birth, saying that “coolers and lawn chairs are welcome.”

The event is free to the public, and donations from the Bar-B-Que sales will be given to the local Blue Star Moms group. Food will be served starting at 6, until gone. Blue Star Moms is a local support group for military families. For more information on Blue Star Moms, please contact Terry Burys at 281-844-5572.

The local Kingwood band “8 Seconds,” will provide lively dance music from 7 PM until 11 PM. Children of all ages are welcome. For more information about the Alspaugh’s Bar-B-Que and Street Dance, contact Alspaugh’s Ace Hardware at (281) 360-2231

After dancing the night away, residents will then be treated to the 29th Annual Humble Area Chamber of Commerce Fireworks Display scheduled for Sunday, July 3rd. This year’s display is sponsored by Team Ford, CenterPoint Energy, Sprint and The Observer Newspapers. The event will be held at 20550 Townsen Boulevard East and begins at 6 PM. The “Pinball Lizard Band” will be performing prior to the fireworks display which is scheduled for dusk, and the Kids “Fun Zone,” sponsored by Spring and the Observer Newspapers, will also be open for kids to play. This annual community wide event is free to the public, and traditionally draws a large crowd. Sponsorships are still being accepted for this event. For more information about the Annual Humble Area Chamber of Commerce Fireworks Display, contact the Chamber at 281-319-8902.

The morning of Monday, July 4th will dawn finding many local children already in place for the much loved Kingwood Civic Club Fishing Rodeo at Fosters Mill Pond. Last year saw over 150 children participate. Local children, aged 15 and under, will compete for trophies and awards, while enjoying some truly small-town fun. No registration is required to participate. The Fishing Rodeo opens at 6 AM and finishes just before 8 AM, just in time for the Kingwood Civic Club’s other two events – the Bike Decorating Contest and July 4th parade. For information, please contact Leslie Tutt at 281-852-2800.

The Kingwood Civic Club Bike Decorating Contest is held each year in the Creekwood Middle School parking lot. Beginning at 8 AM, local children will festoon their bikes in hopes of winning a trophy. Last year, over 50 bikes were entered in the contest. No registration is required to participate. For more information, please contact Tami Hertzwebel at 281-360-6616.

The Kingwood Civic Club July 4th Parade line-up also begins at 8 AM, directly across from Creekwood Middle school on Feather Lakes in Bear Branch. With over 20 years of history, and over 90 groups participating last year, the club is expecting this year’s parade to be the biggest yet. Grand Marshals for this year’s parade are Phil and Carol Gardner. Sparky Nolan, President of the Kingwood Chamber, will serve as Parade Marshall, and will be joined by numerous local dignitaries, including Representative Ted Poe, Houston City Mayor Bill White, Texas House Representative Joe Crabb, City Councilwoman Addie Wiseman and many more.

Groups will be judged at 9 AM, and the parade kicks off at 10 AM sharp. The parade begins at Creekwood Middle School on West Lake Houston Parkway and ends at Kingwood High School, on Kingwood Drive. Registrations for the parade will be accepted at the Lake Houston Parkway YMCA until June 27th.

For more information about the Kingwood Civic Club Kingwood July 4th Parade, contact Cezar Gonzalez or Carol Sutton at the Lake Houston Family YMCA at 281-360-2500.

Local residents have the opportunity to view not only one July 4th parade, but two – a second parade is held in the Forest Cove subdivision. Line-up for this parade is at 9 AM at the Forest Cove Community Center, and the parade starts at 10 AM. The parade route winds through the Forest Cove neighborhood starting and ending at the Community Center. Winning participants will receive trophies.

Following the parade, Forest Cove will host their annual July 4th Bar-B-Que and Community Party at their Community Center. For this event, the Forest Cove community throws open its doors to the public. Attendees will enjoy outdoor games, door prizes, live music, lots of goodies to eat, and will enjoy beating the heat at the Forest Cove Community Pool. The opening ceremony will begin at noon, and Triggs Bar-B-Que will be served from noon to 3 PM. Tickets are $7 for adults, and $4.50 for kids under 10.

For more information about the July 4th events in the Forest Cove subdivision, contact Marian Burrows (281-358-3033) or Joe Geldens (281-358-3804).

The culmination of the July 4th festivities is, of course, the H-E-B Kingwood July 4th Celebration held in Kingwood’s Town Center Park. Now in its 9th year, this is one of the largest July 4th events in the area. The annual event includes a business/vendor fair, live concert, food, games and a large fireworks display. New for this year, H-E-B, the title sponsor will be adding some small town appeal to the event with the H-E-B Kingwood Patriotic Baby Show, and the H-E-B Kingwood Apple Pie Baking Contest. Also, several local residents will also be publicly recognized for their community contributions.

This year’s event is sponsored by H-E-B, Cebridge Connections, Kings Crossing Community Association, RE/MAX Associates Northeast, Kingwood Chamber of Commerce, Kingwood Place Community Association, My Little Juel, Legacy Marketing Services, Goddess Imports, Tejas Toyota and Scion, Deerbrook Forest Chrysler Jeep, Kingwoodnow.com, GameForce and Office Depot. The event is hosted by the Kingwood Town Center Park Merchant Association, and is managed by Kingwood Event Coordinators.

Many residents are looking forward to enjoying the entertaining commentary of Sparky Nolan, President of the Kingwood Chamber of Commerce, who will again be emceeing the July 4th Celebration. Live music will be provided by three bands. The Kingwood Big Band will entertain the audience with Big Band Swing music, and Live Response, a popular local band will provide dance music. Also scheduled is renowned Houston jazz musician, Mark Towns. Music will begin between 5 and 6 PM and last until the fireworks display.

Fireworks are scheduled for dark, and the display is best viewed from Town Center, which boasts a 3 1/2 acre park and numerous balconies around the shopping area.

New for this year is the H-E-B Kingwood Patriotic Baby Show. Children under the age of three will be able to compete for prizes, including everything from a 6 month supply of diapers from H-E-B (up to a $500 value) to a $100 savings bond donated by RE/MAX Associates Northeast. Not your ordinary pageant, entrants will be judged on patriotic attire/costume, personality, and stage presence. Thirty finalists in three age groups (0-12 months, 12-24 months and 24-36 months) will be chosen from the applicants on the day of the event to appear in the Baby Show and compete for prizes. Applications for the show will be accepted at the Kingwood and Atascocita H-E-B stores between June 20th and July 2nd.

H-E-B will also be hosting the H-E-B Apple Pie Baking Contest. Participants can bring their pies, along with the recipes to the H-E-B booth at the July 4th Celebration. Pies will be judged by local chefs, and winners will receive prizes from H-E-B.

For more information about the H-E-B Kingwood July 4th Celebration in Town Center Park, please contact Suzanne Juel at Kingwood Event Coordinators (phone 888-386-8178).
