PineForestElementary student's artwork chosen for billboard

PineForest Elementary Schoolthird-grader Elizabeth Garrett has been named the winner in this year's MHMRA Art Contest. As the winner, her artwork covers a billboard at Loop 610 and Cullen. Elizabeth's creation is entitled "We are all friends!" and depicts smiling people in cheerful, colorful clothes holding hands. The billboard promotes the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority, which serves more than 30,000 people in the Houston metropolitan area. Clear Channel Outdoor donated the billboard space to the non-profit organization. MHMRA's annual billboard art contest involves school districts from throughout Harris County. MHMRA also plans to produce note cards featuring Elizabeth's art. "The message to help bring awareness and understanding to children with special needs is beautifully shown in her artwork," Pine Forest Elementary School art teacher Cathy Ransdell said. A student who excels academically, Elizabeth enjoys drawing and painting and says she wants to be an artist when she grows up.
