Huffman TX: The May Community Center in Huffman, Texas announced its schedule of classes for November 2007. Harris county residents can choose from a wide selection of class in arts and crafts, learning and enrichment, martial arts and exercise, and music and dance.
The May Community Center is one of Harris County Precint 4's three intergenerational community centers. Programs and classes are provided at little or no cost to Harris County residents; however, participants must furnish their own supplies. In most cases, participants can purchase supplies at the volunteer instructor's cost.
Arts and Crafts
Intermediate and Advanced Quilting
Mondays and Fridays at 9 a.m.
Take this opportunity to quilt, share ideas, and enjoy the fellowship of other quilters.
Beginning Oil Painting
Mondays at 6 p.m.
Join professional artist and instructor Annette Botts as she teaches composition, design, color,
and contrast using a variety of subject matter.
Ceramic Class
Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a break for lunch
Learn how to prepare, paint, glaze, and fire green ware pieces. Or, if you prefer, paint pre-fired bisque pieces. A $2 suggested donation helps defray the cost of additional supplies. Only pieces painted by students during class can be fired.
Watercolor Class
Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
Join professional artist and instructor Laurie Humble as she teaches the fundamentals of watercolor using a variety of subject matter.
Beginning Sewing and Serging Classes
Tuesdays, Sewing at 1:30 p.m. and Serging at 2:30 p.m.
New: Youth Sewing Class: Tuesdays at 6 p.m.
Volunteer instructor Lorene Hope teaches beginning sewing and serging classes, which cover basic machine stitches, measuring, combining and interchanging patterns, and seam fi nishing. While the Center has several machines for students’ use, please bring your own serger or sewing machine to become familiar with how it operates.
Woodworking Group
Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. at Doss Activity Building
Sessions include pattern design and the use of different tools. Share ideas and experiences! A $1 suggested donation helps defray the cost of additional supplies.
Intermediate Knitting and Crocheting
Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
If you know the basics of knitting and crocheting, or are a seasoned veteran, join this group and share ideas and techniques.
Advanced Stamping and Embossing
Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Share your knowledge and techniques with others as they create professional looking greeting cards, stationery, and other paper treasures. A basic supply kit is needed to participate, however, observers are welcome. Note: The class meets off-site for a field trip the third Wednesday of each month.
Craft: Holiday Tree Decorating and Party*
Thursday, November 1 at 10 a.m.
Join the holiday merriment as the Mangum- Howell crafters decorate a themed tree for the Center’s annual Santa’s Workshop. Extra hands are welcome, and with this group, it’s always fun, fun, fun! After the tree is decorated, indulge in the delicious goodies at the crafters’ annual holiday party; please bring a favorite covered dish to share.
Beading
Fridays at 1 p.m.
Join volunteer instructor Betty Dotter as she shares her beading expertise and enthusiasm in creating pins, necklaces, earrings, and holiday ornaments.

Rhythm Walking
Weekdays at 8:10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Walk away stress and tension by beginning or ending your day with a brisk 2½-mile walk to music in complete comfort.
Aerobic Exercise Class
Weekdays at 9 a.m., except Wednesdays, at Doss Activity Building
Volunteer instructor Juana Hernandez leads these action-packed aerobic exercise classes. Note: Child care is not provided. For the safety of your children, please make child care arrangements.
Beginning and Intermediate T’ai Chi
Beginning class: Mondays at 9:30 a.m.
Intermediate class: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 24 Steps at 10 a.m. and/or 32 Steps at 11:30 a.m. Volunteer Lynn Perrine instructs these t’ai chi classes where slow, circular, and fl uid movements build strength, balance, and a sense of well-being.
Hatha Yoga Class
Mondays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
at Doss Activity Building Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. Certifi ed instructor Mary Warren teaches yoga methods to achieve physical and mental harmony as well as emotional and spiritual peace. Dress in loose, lightweight clothing; class is held in bare feet! A non-skid yoga mat is required and may be purchased at the Center for $17 wholesale.
Tae Kwon Do Martial Art Classes
Mondays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Doss Activity Building
Volunteer instructor Andrew Rangel, a Texas state karate champion and second-degree black belt,
leads these free classes in tae kwon do karate. A white, karate-style uniform is required and
may be purchased for $30 at the fi rst class. Cash only, please.

Students 13 years and older: 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Sit and Be Fit Exercise
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m.
This great exercise experience is designed to help people who suffer with arthritis, joint aches,
and stiffness.
Meditation Class
Thursdays at 11 a.m.
Volunteer instructor Warren Light covers many different techniques of meditation that help achieve
calmness, relaxation, concentration, compassion, a sense of well-being, and insight.
Please note: If you have concerns about your physical ability, or have a serious
medical condition, please check with your physician before taking any of these classes.
Dart Baseball
Mondays and Fridays at 10 a.m.
No skills are necessary to participate in dart baseball—just a willingness to try. A $1 per week
suggested donation helps defray the cost of supplies and tournament expenses.
Cards and Dominoes
Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Bring a partner or attend alone and try your hand at a variety of card games or dominoes.
Intermediate Bridge
Thursdays at 10 a.m.
This class is open to bridge players who have learned the basics and are ready to advance to the
next level. Volunteer instructor Ethel Rivet covers opening leads against suit and no trump contracts, responses to defensive bids, take-out doubles, and play of hand. Class size is limited.
Duplicate Bridge
Thursdays at 1 p.m.
Volunteer instructor Robert Lathon leads this class for anyone who wants to learn American Standard Bridge in a relaxed atmosphere.
Bingo
Thursday, November 15 at 1 p.m.

Blood Pressure Check with Abigail Cavasos
Wednesdays at 9 a.m.
Center volunteer and retired nurse Abigail (a.k.a. Abby) Cavasos measures and records your
blood pressure.
Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS)
Thursdays at 9 a.m.
TOPS is an excellent support group that provides weekly educational and nutritional facts
necessary to control weight loss.

Beginning Conversational Spanish Class

Certifi ed language instructor Adriana Taranto leads this free course. No prior knowledge of

Monthly Computer Club Meeting

Fridays at 2 p.m.
Preserve your family’s history for your heirs. Let them know how things were when you were

Beginning and Intermediate Line Dancing
Mondays, Beginning I class at noon, Beginning II class at 1 p.m.,
and Intermediate class at 2 p.m.
Volunteer instructor Joyce Parish leads the Beginning I class for students with no prior line dancing
experience. Volunteer instructors John Shipp and Merilyn Jerome lead the Beginning II and Intermediate classes that feature popular line dances as seen on television and in local dance clubs. A partner is not needed.
Urban Line Dancing
Mondays at 7 p.m.
Volunteer instructor Dimple Dixon leads this new dance craze. This class exercises both
the body and mind in a fun and exciting way with choreographed steps to jazz, pop, hip-hop, and
rhythm and blues music. A partner is not needed.
Doss Pickers and Singers Band
Tuesdays at 2 p.m.
Join this upbeat, fun-loving, musical band that meets Tuesday afternoons. This group entertains at
churches, hospitals, and multicare facilities.
Beginning Evening Line Dancing

These free lessons are open to everyone and no prior guitar experience is necessary to participate.
