New Playwrights Work Feature at Annual Drama Production

New Playwrights' Work Feature at Annual Drama Production

Brief drama pieces are guaranteed to entertain the audience at Lone Star College-Kingwood’s ninth annual “Evening of Shorts” April 15-19.
As the second production of the spring semester, the “Evening of Shorts” is an original play festival held on campus.

All works are written, directed, performed and designed by LSC-Kingwood students, staff and community members.

“We are very proud of ‘Evening of Shorts’ because we are giving our students an excellent opportunity to foster new plays as they work together on creative teams to present entirely new works to the public,” said Eric Skiles, professor and artistic director of theatre at LSC-Kingwood.

This year, the production will feature the following original works: “The Devil’s Offer” written by Christopher Cowen and directed by Eric C. Sandell; “The Faces Among Us” written by Aerron Ellisor and directed by Simone McQuitty; “Letting Go” written by Kaleena Steakle and directed by Christian Peck; “No Harm Done” written by Alexis Gray and directed by Steakle; “Terminus Est” written by Dan Ko, directed by Elizabeth Walker; and “Transcendence” written by Ryan Graham and directed by Sarah Mau. Other individuals involved in this production include Skiles, directing mentor; Kali Vlahos, design mentor and technical director; Taylor Gathright, Garrett Cross, Mahayla Kissman, Angie Spargur, Cooper Johnson, Thomas Madison, Ryann Hamilton, Ashleigh Smith, Sandra Peck, Jordan Everett, Anum Khan, Bruce Arrick, Garrett Tatum, Jeanette Pizano, Rachel Bloom, Mandy Rojas, Consuela Axel, and Genessi Delgado.

The “Evening of Shorts” company is comprised of students, faculty and staff and all have unique jobs for each of the plays. For example, one person will become an actor, help move scenery during another play, direct the third play and then help with costumes for another. This opportunity allows students to experience all aspects of theatrical production during the course of the show.

“The audience will see six new plays – never seen before – produced in one evening – it is fast-moving theatre, and explores many interesting subjects, some of which are very timely given current events,” Skiles said. “This is our annual celebration of original theatre!”

The “Evening of Shorts” will run April 15-18 at 7:30 p.m. and April 18-19 at 2 p.m. in LSC-Kingwood’s Black Box Theatre. General admission is $12, senior citizens are $10 and students are $5.
