Temple Beth Torah to Host an Evening of Jewish Blues on January 24th

Temple Beth Torah of Humble, Texas, will be hosting a special dinner and concert on Saturday, January 24, beginning at 6:00 P.M.  California musician, songwriter and storyteller Saul Kaye has become a pioneer in a new genre of music:  Jewish Blues!

Like his great-grandfather who blazed a trail from Russia to South Africa to trade cattle between warring African Tribes, Saul has brought together the sounds of the struggle of the African Slaves in this country with the history of the Jewish slavery experience.  This “Taste of the South” is part of Temple Beth Torah’s “Shabbat around the World” experience, blending good old Southern barbeque (kosher style, of course, with vegetarian options) with the transition of the end of Shabbat. Saul and Rabbi Dan Gordon will share a unique, story-filled Havdallah service (the service that separates Shabbat from the rest of the week) emphasizing a merger between the sacred and the ordinary.  After dinner and Havdallah, Saul’s concert will have the audience clapping hands, snapping fingers to soulfully encounter the bridge between Jews and the Blues.

“Shabbat around the World” is part of a grant from the Houston Jewish Community Foundation (HJCF) to support Temple Beth Torah programs that enhance Jewish learning, worship, community and cultural experiences.  Saul Kaye’s appearance at TBT is also partially funded by the Tom Theriot Memorial Program Fund of Temple Beth Torah.  While the Saturday night program is geared for adults, Saul will join Temple Beth Torah’s Religious School on Sunday, February 25, bringing his passion for Jewish music to the temple’s students.  His appearance at Religious School is also subsidized by another HCJF grant called “Learning to Love the Liturgy,” and the temple’s Tracy Tobin Johnson Memorial Education Fund.
