After consulting with Harris County Fire Marshal Mike Montgomery, Commissioner Jerry Eversole implemented a zero tolerance open flame policy in all Precinct 4 parks. As a result of the increased risk from outdoor fire due to drought, effective immediately all fires including ceremonial and cooking fires are prohibited in Precinct 4 parks. All the barbecue pits and grills in Precinct 4 parks will be covered or locked, and the ban remains effective until it is lifted by Harris County Commissioners Court.

The ban prohibits open flames/fires in all pavilion pits (covered or not), tabletop or camp-style pits and cook stoves, and barbecue trailers and pits in any county park. The zero tolerance open flame policy also bans the use of gas and propane cookers, fryers, boilers, hibachi grills, and any other types of cooking devices that produce open flame or infrared cooking techniques. Campfires and ceremonial type fires are also prohibited at all county parks.

Under the ban, concessionaires may use the standard cooking appliances built into the concession stands and portable electric crock pots, but they cannot use portable grills or any other gas fueled cooking devices outside the concession stand/s.

Harris County Precinct 4 programs serve people of all ages, regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, national origin, or physical ability.
