Lone Star College-Kingwood’s drama students did not have to go very far to collect their awards at the annual Texas Community College Speech and Theatre Association (TCCSTA) Play Festival.
This year’s play festival, held Feb. 24-28 in LSC-Kingwood’s Performing Arts Center (PAC), featured 12 schools and 12 productions. As the host site, the college provided the production space and technical support for each school to successfully produce its play. The TCCSTA Festival was last held at LSC-Kingwood in 2007.
“This event allows us to show off the wonderful facilities and campus here at LSC-Kingwood to our friends from all over the state,” Eric Skiles, artistic director of theatre, professor of theatre and humanities. “It also allows each school to display their theatre productions to a larger audience.”
Schools in attendance at the festival were LSC-Tomball, Blinn College-Brenham, Houston Community College-Northeast, Houston Community College-Southwest, Panola College, Weatherford College, Eastfield College, Howard College, Lamar State College-Port Arthur, Navarro College, Wharton Junior College, and Blinn College-Bryan. At the festival, LSC-Kingwood’s theatre department performed its production of “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank”. This play was not chosen specifically for the festival, but in honor of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps of World War II.
The production received an excellent rating from the judges. Individual awards were also awarded: Kaleena Steakle, earned superior rating for acting; Eric C. Sandell, received excellent rating for acting; Garrett Tatum, earned superior rating for multi-media design and the Best Tech of the Festival award; Aerron Ellisor, received superior rating for stage management; Corey Bischalaney, earned superior rating for stage management. Awards also went to Amanda Rojas, superior rating for light board technology; Anum Khan and Jordan Everett, superior ratings for projection technology; and Megan Naquin, superior rating for sound board technology. The judges were Melissa McMillian-Cunningham, professor of theatre education at Stephen F. Austin State University, and Jim Rambo, retired professor of theatre from McLennan Junior College in Waco.
“These awards are wonderful – and let us know, as educators, that we are properly training our actors and technicians,” Skiles said. They are being recognized for outstanding commitment and work ethic!”
Next year’s TCCSTA Festival will be held at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.
