Trips, crafts and bashes are a few of the fun filled events packing the Special Activity schedule for the May Community Center. Please note: In observance of Independence Day, May Community Center closes Thursday, July 3 at 5 p.m. and reopens Monday, July 7 at 8 a.m.

May Community Center Trips

Sign-up for August trips begins Friday, July 11 at 8:30 a.m. First-come, first-served reservations for all trips must be made in person at the Center.

• Thursday, July 3 at 4 p.m. — The Houston Symphony presents a “Star-Spangled Salute ” The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, The Woodlands. Cost is $2 per person. Dinner is on your own at Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant.
• Wednesday, July 16 at 8:30 a.m. — Federal Reserve Bank and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston. Cost is $4 per person. Lunch is on your own at Luby’s Cafeteria.
• Tuesday, August 12 at 8:30 a.m. — Sam Houston Boat Tour , Houston. Cost is $4 per person. Lunch is on your own at Brady’s Landing.
• Tuesday, August 26 at 9 a.m. — Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart , Houston. Cost is $2 per person. Lunch is on your own at Cleburne Cafeteria. Transportation is limited to individuals 50 years of age and better and is provided through Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program.

Craft: Snowman Insulator*

Tuesday, July 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a break for lunch
With a little paint and creativity, you can create a unique holiday decoration. Call or come by the Center to register and pick up a supply sheet. A $3 suggested donation covers the cost of the insulator and additional supplies.

Whittlin’ and Carvin’ for Kids

Mondays in July, beginning July 7, at 10 a.m.
Join this wonderful group of men and women who show children ages 12 and older how to take an ordinary piece of wood and turn it into a work of art and great conversation piece. To get started, all you need is the desire and a sharp pocketknife!

Craft: Warm Winter Wishes Tote*

Tuesday, July 8 from 10 a.m.
This adorable winter tote is a great place to store all your Christmas card supplies or makes a fabulous gift. Call or come by the Center to register and pick up a supply sheet. A $6 suggested donation is requested to covers the cost of the wooden tote.

Gardening Program: Gingers in the Garden

Thursday, July 10 at 10 a.m.
Plan to join Kingwood resident Ceil Dow, Master Gardener and Ginger Chairman of Mercer Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, as she shares information on the care and cultivation of this hardy and versatile plant. Sign up at the Center or by calling (281) 324-3373.

Fund-Raiser Quilting Workday

Friday, July 11 at10 a.m.
Plan to join the May Quilters to help sew quilts and other fabric art to sell at the Center’s 2008 fund-raiser. No experience is necessary, just a willing spirit. All supplies are provided.

Monthly Luncheon: Featuring Comedian Chuck Montgomery

Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m.
Gather up the family and get ready to have a great time! Houston comedian Chuck Montgomery is bringing his family-friendly, high-energy performance to May Center. Advanced registration is required for this delicious luncheon that features hot dogs, several mouth-watering sides, as well as iced tea, coffee, and dessert. A $3 suggested donation is appreciated, but not required.

Craft: Painted Cookie Plate*

Tuesday, July 15 at 10 a.m.
Show off your cookies in style with this clever hand painted cookie plate. A $2 suggested donation helps defray the cost of additional supplies.

Parent/Child Monthly Story Time: Fourth of July Mice by Bethany Roberts

Thursday, July 17 at 10 a.m.
Create a lasting memory with a child at May Community Center’s monthly parent/child story time. A Center volunteer makes the story come alive, transporting listeners into a world of fantasy. Plan to stay after the story for a craft and snack. A $1 per child suggested donation helps defray the cost of snacks and additional supplies. Please note: An adult must accompany children under the age of 18.

UPCOMING EVENT

Monthly Luncheon: All-You-Can-Eat Catfish and Shrimp Fry Featuring Beach Blanket Bingo!

Friday, August 1 at 11 a.m.
We’re bringing back the days of Frankie Avalon’s and Annette Funicello’s 1965 hit movie, Beach Blanket Bingo, with a little twist! Dress the part in your favorite beachwear and enjoy a swimming combination of bingo and a lunch buffet. Catfish on Wheels sails into Huffman with all-you-can-eat fried catfish, shrimp, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, and beans.

A $12 suggested donation is requested and payable in advance when you register. Advanced registration is required. Sign up today at May Community Center.

May Community Center's free intergenerational programs are part of Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jerry Eversole's educational and recreational commitment to Harris County residents.
