Winter Activities at the May Community Center

Don't let the winter doldrums get you down, take a class or two at your local community center. The May Community center has released the winter class line up.  Beyond the art, craft, language and exercise classes that are perennial favorites, several new classes have been added including classes on Line Dancercise and Wii playtime. 

 

Rhythm Walking
Weekdays at 8:10 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.
Start or end your day with a 2½-mile walk to music in the comfort of the Center.

Body Toning Chair Exercise

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9 a.m.  This exercise class is designed especially for individuals suffering with arthritis, joint aches, stiffness, or a lack of flexibility.

Advanced Conversational Spanish

Mondays at 9 a.m., except Monday, November 24

This class is for students who want to expand their knowledge of the Spanish language without being graded or tested.

One Stroke ™ Decorative Painting

Mondays at 9 a.m., except Monday, November 24

Painting instructor, Ann Rose, teaches the One Stroke™ method of painting. Everyone interested in painting is welcome, regardless of previous painting experience.

Party Bridge

Mondays at 1 p.m.

Improve your bridge skills and meet other bridge enthusiasts at these weekly party bridge sessions. Participants must call the Center to secure a place at a table.

Pinochle

Mondays at 1 p.m.
A volunteer instructor is available each week to teach the time-honored game of pinochle.

Handmade Ceramics

Mondays at 6 p.m.

Volunteer instructor Nani Heslep teaches students ages 10 and older the basics of working with clay. Lessons include making vessels and sculptures using the pinch, coil, and slab methods. The suggested donation amount is determined by the amount of clay needed for each piece.

Beginning Spanish

Mondays 6:30 p.m. or Tuesdays at 9 a.m., except Monday, November 24 and Tuesday,
November 25

These free classes focus on the basic language skills needed to function in a Spanish-speaking environment. Call or come by the Center to register

May Center Players, A Children’s Theatrical Group

Mondays at 7 p.m.

Children ages 7 to 14 do not need any acting experience to participate in this theatrical group, but they must be able to read. Call the Center to register.

East Harris County 4-H Club

Monday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m.

The mission of 4-H Club is to prepare youth to meet the challenges of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood through educational experiences with an emphasis on learning through doing. This fun, family-oriented club meets the second Monday of each month and currently focuses on shooting sports. Rockin’ On Moms Playgroup

Mondays, November 10 at 10 a.m.

Dart Baseball

Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

No skills are needed to join May Center’s dart baseball team.

Karate

Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m.

Volunteers from the American Society of Karate teach the techniques of American karate. Classes are free! For additional information or to register, call the Center at (281) 324-3373.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Beginner juniors, ages 6 to 12:     5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. (Class size is limited to 60)Advanced juniors, ages 6 to 12:   7 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Class size is limited to 20)


Yoga

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Certified hatha yoga instructor Cindy Roberts invites people of all fitness levels to participate and experience the benefits of yoga.

Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Check

Tuesday, November 18 at 9 a.m.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle also means keeping your blood pressure and blood sugar in check. Get checked out the third Tuesday of the month to make sure that “all systems are go!”

Nintendo® Wii™ Bowling Practice

Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

With an easy-to-use wireless controller and many familiar games, the Nintendo® Wii™ is the latest craze for people of all ages. Call or sign-up at the Center to schedule a one-hour practice session; tournaments are held regularly, so practice often to sharpen your skills.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly)

Wednesdays at 10 a.m. or Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

This support group offers nutritional information and encouragement to help control weight.

Quilting: Hold Everything, Part 1

Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m., except November 26

Experienced instructor Anne Sparkman teaches this class for beginners and experienced quilters. This month’s featured project is part 2 of Signs of Autumn. Step-by-step instructions make this a great way to learn the art of quilting!

Dominoes and More Dominoes

Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

Play “42,” “Train,” or “Spinner” with other community members.

Canasta

Wednesdays at 3 p.m.

If you enjoy card games like spades and hearts, you will love canasta!

Beginning Tai Chi QiGong

Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

Tai Chi QiGong, is based on the gentle and smooth movements of Tai Chi martial art, and the unification of mind and Qi (energy), and the three essentials of QiGong: regulating the body, mind, and breath.

Speak Mandarin Chinese in 500 Words

Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Learn to speak and read Mandarin Chinese easily through this effective course. People of all ages are welcome to participate.

Nintendo® Wii™ Free Play

Thursdays at 9 a.m.

With an easy-to-use wireless controller and many familiar games, the Nintendo® Wii™  is the latest craze for people of all ages. Enjoy games such as bowling, baseball, tennis, darts, pool, and boxing, as well as many more. The simple game play and gentle motions of the Wii™ game system make it perfect for anyone who wants to have a good time.

Intermediate Line Dancing

Thursdays at 1 p.m.

A volunteer teaches this fast-paced intermediate line dancing class.

May Belles and Beaus Chorus

Rehearsals: Thursdays at 1 p.m.

This musical group entertains at community events, hospitals, and multicare facilities.

Parent/Child Sewing

Thursdays at 4:30 p.m.

Learn basic sewing skills and make creative projects of your very own! This hands-on class is open to the first nine children ages eight and older who are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sewing machines and sergers are provided by the Center. Due to safety issues and space limitations, only children registered with their parent or guardian will be allowed to attend. Pick up a supply sheet at the Center.

Watercolor

Fridays at 9:30 a.m.

Beginning and experienced students learn composition, design, color, and contrast from a
professional artist.

Oil Painting

Fridays at 1 p.m.

A professional artist shares her knowledge of painting with students ages 11 and older.

Line Dancercise

Fridays at 2:30 p.m.

Dance your way to heart health with this workout taught by a volunteer instructor.

About the May Community Center 

May Community Center's free intergenerational programs are part of Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jerry Eversole's educational and recreational commitment to Harris County residents. May Community Center is a Precinct 4 community center located at 2100 Wolf Road, Huffman 77336.

Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note: In observance of Labor Day, May Community Center closes Friday, August 29 at 5 p.m., and reopens Tuesday, September 2 at 8 a.m. For more information regarding classes or other Center programs, please call (281) 324-3373 or visit www.hcp4.net/ccenters.
